Macbeth is among the best-known of William Shakespeare's plays, and is his shortest tragedy, believed to have been written some time between 1603 and 1606.
It is frequently performed at both amateur and professional levels, and has been adapted for opera, film, books, stage and screen. Often regarded as archetypal, the play tells of the dangers of the lust for power and the betrayal of friends.
For the plot Shakespeare drew loosely on historical accounts of King Macbeth of Scotland by Raphael Holinshed and the Scottish philosopher Hector Boece. There are many superstitions centered on the belief the play is somehow "cursed". Some actors will not mention the name of the play aloud, referring to it instead as "The Scottish play".

The story concerns the ill-fated love of Cléopâtre and Marc-Antoine. Marc-Antoine sees Cléopâtre for the first time following the conquering of Egypt and is instantly entranced by her beauty. Dismissing his obligations in Rome, Marc-Antoine goes with Cléopâtre, and even after returning to fulfill his promise of marriage to Octavia, he is lured back by lust and jealousy. Being told, falsely, that Cléopâtre has been killed, Marc-Antoine falls on his own sword and is then brought to Cléopâtre. As she watches him die by her side, she pulls a poisonous snake from a basket of fruit and clutches it to her breast.

A major event, the world premiere of this new opera by Philippe Boesmans will be performed by the cream of French singers, including Mireille Delunsch and Yann Beuron. To a libretto taken from Witold Gombrowiczs play of the same name and in a staging by Luc Bondy, the character of Yvonne evolves, revealing others not as they think they are but reflecting their inner truth as if in a mirror. Boesmans musical language in this, his sixth opera, is remarkable for its rich colours and luxuriant harmony, allowing the voice to take pride of place in styles ranging from recitative to Sprechgesang.
