Maria Stuarda Theatre Tickets, Lyric Theatre, The Lowry, Salford, Manchester

New production

The centrepiece of Donizetti’s historical opera is a clash that never took place, between Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots. Charting events leading to Mary’s execution, Donizetti courted controversy by treating such powerful material, and the opera was initially banned.

Maria Stuarda is one of Donizetti’s most dramatic and affecting works, and with soprano Antonia Cifrone (Lady Macbeth here in Spring 2008) and mezzo Sarah Connolly (Romeo in I Capuleti e i Montecchi last Autumn) battling it out as the rival queens, fireworks are forecast.

Cinderella Theatre Tickets, Royal Opera House, London

The story of Cinderella is one of the best-known fairytales, and Frederick Ashton’s full-length version for The Royal Ballet has all its familiar ingredients. A downtrodden young girl, a glass slipper and a handsome prince combine to make the perfect piece of story-telling, and with a fairy godmother around, anything can happen: pumpkins become coaches, rags turn to ball gowns and there’s bound to be a happy ending. Ashton’s ballet draws together a wealth of wonderfully drawn characters, portrayed against the evocative themes and colours of Prokofiev’s great orchestral score.

This is a mysterious and magical fantasy world, where the comedy of Cinderella’s pantomime step-sisters – unlucky in looks and love – provides the perfect foil for the developing romance of Cinderella and the Prince. Cinderella is a family event full of the magic of not just of the fairy godmother, but of The Royal Ballet too.

Concerto / The Judas Tree / Elite Theatre Tickets, Royal Opera House, London

Three ballets by Kenneth MacMillan celebrate his unique talent and versatility. MacMillan’s vision has been vital in shaping The Royal Ballet’s style and repertory, and what better way to appreciate his art than with this rare chance to experience three contrasting works in a single performance. Abstract, dramatic, humorous – this programme gives a wonderfully varied introduction not just to MacMillan’s work but to the beauty and dramatic power of ballet itself. Concerto, to Shostakovich’s Second Piano Concerto, contrasts moments of exuberance and elegiac reflection. The Judas Tree places a single woman among 13 men to enact a harrowing event that is recognizably contemporary but with biblical overtones. Its specially commissioned score will be conducted by Music Director of The Royal Ballet Barry Wordsworth. Elite Syncopations completes the programme with a sparkling evocation of a dance hall that brings ragtime rhythms to the dance and a ragtime band to the stage.

The Cunning Little Vixen Theatre Tickets, Royal Opera House, London

Bill Bryden’s beautiful production of The Cunning Little Vixen brings charm, wit and a wonderful life-affirming message to The Royal Opera. Inspired by a cartoon of the exploits of the feisty little Vixen Sharp-Ears, the opera brings to life the world of the forest. Not only do we meet the people who live by it and pass through it, but also come across all the creatures who live there – caterpillars, badgers, dragonflys, frogs and, of course, the Vixen herself. From her youthful escapades in the chicken house to her courtship with a handsome fox, this is a wonderful tale of the richness of the cycle of life.

Charles Mackerras, the champion of Czech music and the great interpreter of Janácek, conducts a cast who combine great singing and acting to bring to life the engaging characters in this special world – a lovelorn schoolteacher, a tipsy priest, a poacher. And then there is the gamekeeper who observes the changing seasons in the forest and encounters our heroine on several occasions, each with different consequences. The evocative and rapturous music and the touching story make this a truly captivating opera for young and old.

Mikhailovsky - Laurencia Theatre Tickets, London Coliseum, London

The Mikhailovsky Theatre presents the revival of Vakhtang Chabukiani’s masterpiece Laurencia, based on the play Fuente Ovejuna by Lope de Vega. Chabukiani was one of the first to create a new choreographic language by means of his own particular blend of folk dance and classical ballet. In his ballet to the music by Alexander Krein, Chabukiani asserted the importance of male dance, furthering in particular the notion of the “heroic” style. Laurencia was premiered of 1939 at the Kirov Theatre. Leading parts were performed by Natalia Dudinskaya (Laurencia), Vakhtang Chabukiani (Frondoso) and Tatiana Vecheslova (Pascuala). In 1956 the ballet was staged at the Bolshoi Theatre where Vakhtang Chabukiani partnered Maya Plisetskaya.

In 2010, London will be the first city in the world to witness this historical revival of the famous ballet, after a fifty year absence from stage, in a new full-length production created for the Mikhailovsky by Mikhail Messerer.

Please note: there are no surtitles in this production.

Mikhailovsky - Giselle Theatre Tickets, London Coliseum, London

The stage life of Giselle wasn't an easy one. After the premiere of 1841 featuring Carlotta Grisi and Lucien Petipa, the ballet was performed in France till 1863, when it disappeared from the repertoire. Giselle was forgotten in its motherland but became a most frequently shown ballet on the Russian stage. In 1842, the ballet was staged in St.Petersburg. At the beginning of the 20th century during the ground-breaking Diaghilev’s Russian Seasons, the French saw their national ballet, faithfully nurtured in Russia.

The Mikhailovsky Theatre’s 2008 production of Giselle by Nikita Dolgushin, a specialist in historical works, managed to amaze both the public and the critics. Dolgushin, a noble Albrecht in his time as a dancer, inspired the creation of the ballet and delicately united dance and pantomime. The choreographer revealed the essence of the romantic ballet: the story of Giselle is told in the language of ballet classicism. Together with Vyacheslav Okunev, who designed the epitome of romantic settings, Dolgushin created a production that was described by a British critic ‘an exemplary Giselle’.

Please note: there are no surtitles in this production.

Swan Lake is the jewel in the repertoire of the Mikhailovsky Theatre and the highlight of its London season in 2010. This is a revival of the historical Bolshoi Theatre staging in 1956 - an exquisite production with choreography by Alexander Gorsky and Asaf Messerer. The triumphal restaging of this Swan Lake at the Mikhailovsky Theatre in September 2009 was devised by Mikhail Messerer, the company’s ballet master in chief. The epoch of Alexander Gorsky saw the next phase in the evolution of dance following the ballet classicism of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. The staging boasts the superb sets and costumes by renowned Russian theatre designer of Georgian origin, Simon Virsaladze. The legend of a young prince finding his true love, a swan princess bewitched by an evil genius, offers all the dancers of the company a great opportunity to show their talents.

Mikhailovsky - Cipollino Theatre Tickets, London Coliseum, London

This ballet enchants you from its very first minute. The harmony of the melodic and ear-catching music by Karen Khachaturian, bright sets and costumes by Valery Leventhal and vivid choreography by Genrikh Mayorov, perfect both for children and for grown-ups, made it a real blockbuster. In London, an extra element is added: specially for the noisy auditorium of chattering youngsters a narrator will deliver the storyline and introduce the characters. The fairy-tale story by Italian author Gianni Rodari tells of the adventures of the Little Onion boy (in Italian, Cipollino), who fights the unjust treatment of his fellow vegetable folk (his little girlfriend Radish, old Mr Pumpkin, handyman Master Grape) by the fruit “aristocracy” (foppish Prince Lemon, martinet Signor Tomato and Countesses Cherries). Even though the ballet was created especially for young people, it never lacks “serious” choreography of classical ballet. The principals of the Mikhailovsky Ballet really enjoy themselves turning from Siegfrieds and Odettes into ‘vegetables’ and ‘fruits’. The rhythms of dance, the portrayal and humour of the characters and the exceptional performances will keep everyone enthralled.

Mikhailovsky - Triple Bill Theatre Tickets, London Coliseum, London

An exhilarating performance showing the talents of the Mikhailovsky dancers, it was greeted with countless curtain calls and critical appreciation when they made their London debut in July 2008. This season the Triple Bill programme contains Halte de Cavalerie (Cavalry Halt) by Marius Petipa, giving the audience a second chance to see the classic gem created in 1896 to music by Ivan Armsheimer, and a new piece created especially for the Mikhailovsky Ballet by Viacheslav Samodurov to music by Domenico Scarlatti. The Divertissements will crown the programme. They include Asaf Messerer’s thrilling pas de deux Spring Waters to the music of Sergei Rachmaninov, staged by Mikhail Messerer and a pas de deux from the Mikhailovsky’s production of Spartacus choreographed by Georgy Kovtun. It is a great opportunity to see both contemporary and classical ballets performed by true virtuosi.

La Fille Mal Gardee Theatre Tickets, Royal Opera House, London

La Fille mal gardée (or The Wayward Daughter) is one of Frederick Ashton’s most charming ballets. Its combination of lighthearted story, beautiful solos and pas de deux and lively ensembles have made it a timeless classic of the Royal Ballet repertory and an audience favourite every time. Haystacks and chickens, ponies and storms, and a charming tale of young love in a picturesque rural scene – everything sparkles with a winning combination of uplifting and expressive dance, vibrant colour and lyrical music. This is a great introduction to ballet for newcomers of any age.

In the story, young Lise, the ‘wayward daughter’ of the title, is determined to marry Colas, the son of a farmer, for love. But her guardian aunt Widow Simone would rather she married the child-like Alain for money and status. The battle of wits and wills that follows is full of humour — and at every turn, Lise manages to stay one step ahead of her guardian. There are no prizes for guessing what the happy ending will be. Whether in the expressive power of the lovers’ pas de deux, the quirky characterizations of Widow Simone and Alain, or the shared joy of the rustic dances, this is a work to coax smiles and leave indelible memories

Il Turco in Italia Theatre Tickets, Royal Opera House, London

It’s La dolce vita with a twist in this sparkling production of Rossini’s opera of comic confusion – Il turco in Italia. Naples in the 1960s is the setting for a riotous and stylish staging by the ever-popular directors Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier, returning for its first revival by The Royal Opera since its acclaimed premiere in 2005. When a handsome Turkish prince arrives in pursuit of one of his harem he can have no idea of the unintended consequences in store when he falls for the charms of a bored housewife — whose husband not surprisingly objects. Add a smooth lady’s man and a poet who sees everything as the subject for his new play, then just watch as the cast get hopelessly knotted in intrigues, plots and doppelgangers.

Once again, the performers are stellar indeed — top Royal Opera favourites acclaimed in this difficult and delightful Italian repertory. Ildebrando d’Arcangelo as the prince and Aleksandra Kurzak as the errant wife lead a cast guaranteed to bring out the sparkle of one of Rossini’s most engaging scores. There are wonderful ensembles, a great quintet and witty duets that give every opportunity for brilliant singing. Under the baton of Maurizio Benini, with the precision of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and the versatility of the Royal Opera Chorus, this is a rare occasion to bring out the full thrill of Rossini in live performance.

Aida Theatre Tickets, Royal Opera House, London

Verdi's Aida returns to the Royal Opera stage in a new production with a world-class cast headed by Marcelo Alvarez as the warrior Radames and Micaela Carosi as the captured princess of the title. The intensity and tragedy of the story inspired Verdi to some of his most haunting, powerful and famous music. Christine Walkden: My Life in Gardening Event Tickets, The Plaza, Stockport

Award-winning Horticulturalist Christine Walkden takes her gardening life on the road

Christine Walkden’s “gardening life” encompasses passion, formidable expertise, hard won experience and a serious desire to share the rewards of gardening with others. It’s the work of a lifetime.

Christine is taking the story of that life’s work on the road in a national tour:  My Life in Gardening.

Her appearances will give audiences the opportunity to hear first-hand how this accomplished Lancashire plantswoman and horticulturalist made her way from child gardener to nationally recognised horticultural expert. Of course there will be plenty of stories about the quirky characters and unforeseen “adventures” that have shaped her journey along the way. Audiences will have a chance to ask questions in Christine’s very own Gardener’s Question Time session following her talk.

She hopes this tour will help people see that “that gardeners do a lot more every day than just weed, cut grass and plant a few things.”

Fans of Christine’s down-to-earth style coupled with razor sharp horticultural knowledge are wide ranging.  Those who barely know which end of a bulb is up as well as life-long gardeners enjoy her warm, straight-talking approach and her sheer delight in “Mother Nature.” She’s emphatic that a garden should be an extension of you and not a product of what any current “media hype tends to suggest”.

And audiences can’t get enough of her.  She’s the resident gardening expert on the One Show and has done two popular BBC 2 series of Christine’s Garden. Christine has made regular appearances on the Paul O’Grady Show and GMTV and has contributed to Countryfile, Gardener’s World, Gardeners Diary and the BBC’s Chelsea Flower Show coverage. She’s even has made a guest appearance on Shooting Stars. Christine is a past winner of the Garden Writers' Guild Radio Broadcasting Award and has authored two books, The Houseplant Almanac and A Year in Christine’s Garden. Later this year she will receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Essex.

Paul O’Grady calls Christine simply “the best gardener on TV”.

The Household Cavalry Museum Admission Attraction Tickets, The Household Cavalry Museum, London

The Household Cavalry Museum is a living museum about real people doing a real job in a real place.

You can see troopers working with horses in the original 18th century stables and hear first hand accounts of their rigorous and demanding training.

The experience comes alive with compelling personal stories, interactive displays and stunning rare objects – many on public display for the first time.

Historic setting

The Household Cavalry Museum sits within Horse Guards in Whitehall, central London, one of the city’s most historic buildings. Dating from 1750, it is still the headquarters of the Household Division, in which the Household Cavalry has performed the Queen’s Life Guard in a daily ceremony that has remained broadly unchanged for over 350 years.

The Household Cavalry

The Household Cavalry was formed in 1661 under the direct order of King Charles II and now consists of the two senior regiments of the British Army – The Life Guards and the Blues and Royals.

We have two roles: as a mounted regiment (on horseback), we guard Her Majesty The Queen on ceremonial occasions in London and across the UK and are a key part of the Royal pageantry; as an operational regiment we serve around the world in armoured fighting vehicles. We currently have units deployed on active service in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our fighting capacity is matched by our strategic role in international peace keeping and humanitarian operations.

Our Collections

Over the centuries we have amassed an outstanding collection of rare and unique treasures from ceremonial uniforms, royal standards and gallantry awards to musical instruments, horse furniture and silverware by Fabergé. Each exhibit has its own compelling story to tell and many are on display for the very first time.

You can see two silver kettledrums given to the regiment in 1831 by William IV; the pistol ball that wounded Sir Robert Hill at Waterloo and the cork leg which belonged to the first Marquess of Anglesy, who, as the Earl of Uxbridge, lost his real one at Waterloo. Modern additions to the collection include Jacky Charlton’s football cap – he did his national service with the regiment and Sefton’s bridle – the horse that was injured in the 1982 Hyde Park bombings.

Much of the collection has resulted from the close association that has existed between the Household Cavalry and Royalty. We have, after all, protected successive kings and queens from rebels, rioters and assassins for nearly 350 years.

Working Stable Block

Visitors can gain a unique behind-the-scenes look at our working stable block. All the horses here are on duty and at different times of the day you will see something going on - you might see the horses being brought in, groomed, fed and watered, their hooves oiled and shoes checked, their saddles adjusted ready to go on guard or just see the stables themselves being cleared or washed down.

Both our horses and riders go through a rigorous and demanding training. In the museum display, you will hear first hand accounts of what this training is like and the techniques our soldiers use to master their horses and complete the gruelling preparations for regimental inspections.

Quatuor Danel Evening Concert

Schubert   Quartettsatz
Brahms     String Quartet in A minor, Op. 51 No. 2
Taneyev    Piano Quintet in G
with David Fanning (piano)

Sergey Taneyev’s 1912 Piano Quintet is a monument of the Russian repertoire: in effect the piano-chamber masterpiece that neither his teacher Tchaikovsky nor his pupil Rachmaninov managed to write. It combines their emotionalism with the intellectual rigour of Brahms and ends with the most tintinnabulating conclusion in the entire repertoire. And as a foil, the turbulent centrepiece of Brahms’s quartet trilogy, with the stormiest of Schubert to set the scene.

NB: this concert will be preceded at 18.00 by a live BBC ‘Discovering Music’ recording, in which Taneyev’s Piano  Quintet will be analysed and discussed by Stephen Johnson with David Fanning and the Quatuor Danel

Carmen, the world's most popular opera, will take over The O2 in May 2010 for just three performances and follows on from highly successful and popular classical stagings of Carmina Burana, Andrea Bocelli and the world premiere of Ben Hur Live at the venue.

Directed by David Freeman, founder of The Opera Factory and whose previous credits include Madam Butterfly Tosca and Carmen at the Royal Albert Hall, his production of Bizet's masterpiece comes to The O2 on a grand and spectacular scale. From the very first note to the final tragic chords, this stunning in-the-round production vividly portrays the powerful story of lust, superstition and murder that passionately unravels with fatal consequences.

Carmen is presented by Raymond Gubbay and The O2 and will be performed by a superb cast of over 150 artists, including dancers, acrobats and fire-eaters. The wonderful set and fabulous costumes will bring to life the dusty atmosphere of the town square, the cool night air of the smugglers' mountain hideout and the colourful festivities outside of the bullring in Seville.

Sung in English, Bizet's unforgettable score contains some of opera's finest arias and best loved music. The rousing Song of the Toreador, the beguiling Seguidilla, the tantalising Habanera and the enchanting Flower Song - sensual music that perfectly captures the very essence of Spain. Accompanied by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Gareth Hancock, this world class company of singers, musicians and artists will provide an unforgettable production of Bizet's Carmen, staged on an epic scale at The O2.

The principle roles will be shared by Cristina Nassif and Louise Poole (as Carmen) and John Hudson and Philip O'Brien (as Don Jose).

Fra Angelico Catalogue Exhibition Tickets, British Museum, London

This to purchase the Fra Angelico Catalogue only.

This major exhibition features 100 exquisite drawings by Italian Renaissance artists including Raphael, Leonardo, Michelangelo and Verrocchio among others.

Drawn from the holdings of the British Museum and the Uffizi in Florence, the two foremost collections in the field, the display charts the increasing importance of drawing during this period, featuring works by Leonardo da Vinci, Fra Angelico, Jacopo and Gentile Bellini, Botticelli, Carpaccio, Filippo Lippi, Mantegna, Michelangelo, Verrocchio and Titian.
In 15th-century Italy there was a fundamental shift in style and artistic thinking in the use of preparatory drawings. What began as a means of preserving artistic ideas became the ideal way to perfect more naturalistic forms and perspective – a new approach by painters, sculptors and architects.

Infrared and other technology used in conservation research provide fresh insights into how drawing allowed painters to experiment and explore with a freedom not always reflected in their finished works. Examples in the exhibition show the trend towards depiction of movement and expression of emotion, often inspired by classical antiquity.

This exhibition is a unique opportunity to discover the evolution of drawing which laid the foundations of the High Renaissance style of Michelangelo and Raphael.

David Alden follows his double Olivier Award-winning production of Janáček's Jenůfa with a new staging of the Czech composer's later lyrical masterpiece, Katya Kabanova. A claustrophobically intense yet heart-rending study of sexual morality within a close-knit community, it was inspired by Janáček's erotic obsession with a younger married woman. Stunning singing actress Patricia Racette makes her ENO debut as the passionate soul trapped in a loveless marriage, with Stuart Skelton (a sensational Peter Grimes in another Alden staging in 2009) as the stranger who offers her a brief hope of happiness. Janáček's most lyrically emotional score is conducted by Mark Wigglesworth with an outstanding cast also featuring Susan Bickley, Clive Bayley, John Graham-Hall, Anna Grevelius and Alfie Boe.

The Elixir of Love Theatre Tickets, London Coliseum, London

The most often performed opera in Italy for two decades after its premiere, Donizetti's The Elixir of Love is still the most popular operatic ‘rom com' of all. Jonathan Miller's staging affectionately relocates the action from 19th century rural Italy to small-town ‘50s America. One of today's highest-flying young lyric tenors, John Tessier made a sensational ENO debut in the 2008 revival of Rossini's The Barber of Seville; he now returns as Nemorino, the lovesick young mechanic who believes that a travelling salesman (played by comic maestro Andrew Shore) really can cure his broken heart. With The Elixir of Love running alongside Lucia di Lammermoor, ENO audiences have a rare chance to relish both the comic and tragic sides of Donizetti's operatic genius.

Tosca Theatre Tickets, London Coliseum, London

Among the great dramatic sopranos of our time, Catherine Malfitano made an unforgettable ENO debut in 2006 as the tortured Kostelnicka in David Alden's Olivier Award-winning production of Jenůfa. Famed as one of the foremost Toscas of recent decades, she now returns to direct Puccini's ever popular opera with rising star Amanda Echalaz –  already heralded as ‘the leading Tosca of her generation' (The Independent) — making her ENO debut in the role that Ms  Malfitano once made her own. With one Tosca on stage and another behind the scenes, a radical new design approach and the proven Puccinian passion of Edward Gardner, ENO's Olivier Award-winning Music Director, in the pit, this new production promises to be a thrilling new take on Puccini's most powerfully theatrical opera.

Cinderella Theatre Tickets, London Coliseum, London

English National Ballet's Cinderella tells everyone's favourite rags-to-riches story. Cinderella is tormented by her spiteful stepsisters and would do anything to attend the Prince's glamorous ball. Rejected, upset and alone, Cinderella's Fairy Godmother intervenes and transforms her into a glittering Princess who shall go to the ball.

Prokofiev's uplifting score played by English National Ballet's symphony orchestra together with David Walker's sumptuous costumes and sets conjure up the fairy tale world of Cinderella perfectly.

"This award-winning three-act ballet was the first full-length creation from Michael Corder. Interestingly, in this production of Cinderella, the step-sisters are not played by men but women on pointe to take advantage of the great music for their solos. The fact they are no longer purely comedic roles also highlights the plight of Cinderella much more"

This iconic opera tells the story of the love affair between Mimi and the struggling writer Rodolfo. The welcome return of an audience favourite, Tony award-winning director Stewart Laing’s production presents a traditional tale in a meaningful contemporary context - the exciting modern art scene of 21st century New York.

Young artists, living and working in stark studio apartments, turn loft spaces into art galleries. When Rodolfo sees Mimi for the first time, they fall hopelessly in love - but the course of true love rarely runs smoothly. Encompassing dramatic passion and the pain of being young, poor and in love, Puccini’s whirling melodic score moves from revelry to romance as it carries the story toward its tragic conclusion.

Young Irish soprano Celine Byrne and French tenor Avi Klemberg, make their Scottish Opera débuts. Nadine Livingstone (who also takes the title role in this season’s Kátya Kabanová) sings Musetta. Scottish Opera Music Director Francesco Corti conducts.

The Adventures of Mr Broucek Theatre Tickets, Theatre Royal Glasgow, Glasgow

The Adventures of Mr Broucek is one of Janácek’s most vibrantly original works. Rarely presented in the UK, this is an exciting new collaboration with Opera North. The production is a first for Scottish Opera who, with Welsh National Opera, championed the composer’s work in the 1970s and 80s with an acclaimed Janácek Cycle.

The beer-fuelled Mr Broucek’s adventures take him through space and time: first to the moon and then to the middle of the revolution in 15th-century Prague. By turns funny, surreal, tender and thrilling, the opera is full of wonderful portraits and parodies - of artists, poets, soldiers, and the ordinary people of Janácek’s homeland.

The music is just as varied as Broucek’s adventures, from the extra-terrestrial sounds of the moon music, to the gorgeous orchestral interlude which transforms the action from the moon to Prague. Bagpipes and an organ add an edge to the stirringly patriotic Hussite hymns and celebrations, sung by a 40 strong chorus.

John Fulljames directs a superb cast including English tenor John Graham Hall and Scottish contralto Frances McCafferty, making her Scottish Opera débuts, alongside celebrated Scottish baritone Donald Maxwell.

La traviata Theatre Tickets, Royal Opera House, London

La traviata is one of the most popular of all operas, loved for its drama, its excitement and its famous music. The social scandal, stormy love affair and doomed heroine of La Dame aux camélias inspired Verdi to music of matching passion and memorable melodies. Richard Eyre’s ever-popular production for The Royal Opera brings the elegant world of 19th-century Parisian society to life. There is the glamour of an extravagant lifestyle made especially vivid through Bob Crowley’s sumptuous designs – but there are also the swiftly revealed dangers at the tragic heart of the drama.

The claustrophobic conventions of society, painful deception and true self-sacrifice are even more powerful and poignant when set to Verdi’s music. Such powerful emotions so beautifully portrayed have earned La traviata its place as one of the greatest operas of all time. The wonderful musical resources of The Royal Opera – cast, conductor, chorus, orchestra – and this ever-popular production show why La traviata is also such great theatre.

Abduction from the Seraglio Theatre Tickets, Milton Keynes Theatre, Milton Keynes

Belmonte’s lover Constanze is being held captive by Pasha Selim. If Belmonte is going to rescue Constanze he will have to get past the Pasha’s steward Osmin first. This may not necessarily sound like the premise of a comedy but The Abduction from the Seraglio is one of Mozart’s wittiest and most delightful creations.

The joyous overture suggests a boisterous sense of fun, which is carried right through to the final curtain with stratospheric arias and blissful ensembles along the way. BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Rosenblatt Recital Song Prize winner Andrew Kennedy performs the role of Belmonte.

James Robinson’s stylish production for Welsh National Opera is irresistibly entertaining, setting the opera on the Orient Express of the 1920s en route from Paris to Istanbul.

Cast includes Andrew Kennedy as Belmonte, Lisette Oropesa as Constanze, Petros Magoulas as Osmin, Claire Ormshaw as Blonde and Wynne Evans as Pedrillo.

Shakespeare's Globe Theatre Tour & Exhibition Sightseeing Tickets, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, London

Shakespeare's Globe Exhibition is the world's largest exhibition devoted to Shakespeare and the London in which he lived and worked. Housed beneath the reconstructed Globe Theatre on London's Bankside, the exhibition explores the remarkable story of the Globe, and brings Shakespeare's world to life using a range of interactive displays and live demonstrations.

Visit the exciting and often dangerous world of Elizabethan London where in 1599, Bankside was the entertainment center of the capital packed with gambling dens, brothels, bear-baiting pits and theaters. Ordinary people flocked to see Shakespeare's plays and they laughed, cried, shouted abuse at the actors, ate and drank during the performances.

As a visitor to the Exhibition you'll discover how shows were produced in the theaters of Shakespeare's time, from writing and rehearsals to music, dance and performance. Learn about the traditional crafts and techniques used during the process of rebuilding the Globe and find out how special effects were produced in Shakespeare's time - from thunder and lightning to flying on stage and realistic blood and gore. Listen to recordings from some of the most Shakespearean performances ever or join the cast and add your own voice to a scene recorded by Globe actors. Create your own Shakespearean phrases in the word jungle, watch a sword-fighting display and browse the costume collection, where you can find out about the extraordinary methods used in creating clothes 400 years ago.

A visit to the Exhibition includes a guided tour of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre where storytellers take you on a fascinating half-hour tour of the auditorium. Journey through time to Elizabethan London with their colourful tales of the 1599 theater experience as well as the reconstruction process of the 1990's and how the wooden 'o' works today as an imaginative and experimental theatrical space.

St Paul's Admission Attraction Tickets, St Paul's Cathedral, London

Book your admission tickets in advance and save 50p per adult admission. Advance tickets only £12 compared to £12.50 door price.

St Paul's with its world-famous dome is an iconic feature of the London skyline, but there is so much more to Sir Christopher Wren's masterpiece than its impressive façade. The interior of the soaring dome, the glittering mosaics, the intricate stone carving and the breathtaking view down the nave towards the quire are just a few of the reasons why a visit to St Paul's is a must.

St Paul's has been a spiritual focus for the nation since its first service in 1697 and many important events have taken place within its walls, from the state funerals of Lord Nelson, the Duke of Wellington and Sir Winston Churchill to the wedding of the HRH The Prince of Wales to Lady Diana Spencer and the Thanksgiving for Her Majesty The Queen's Golden Jubilee. The Cathedral is also where national services of reconciliation and remembrance are often held, most recently the Asian Tsunami Memorial Service and the Service of Remembrance: London 2005.

With its historic £40 million restoration programme now nearing completion, there has never been a better time to visit St Paul's. For the first time in its 300-year history, the Cathedral has been comprehensively cleaned and repaired inside and out and the results are simply breathtaking.

The West Front, once blackened and damaged, now rises majestically at the top of Ludgate Hill and details previously hidden stand out crisp and proud. The interior has been transformed by state of the art restoration techniques and the light that now floods the space highlights the luminescent Portland stone and brings mosaics, carvings and sculpture to life. In the dome, exquisite 18th century paintings by Sir James Thornhill showing scenes from the life of St Paul have been returned to their original beauty.

As well as noting the startling changes in the interior of the Cathedral and admiring the contemporary paintings by Russian artist Sergei Chepik on the Cathedral floor and arresting wrought-iron and bronze memorial gates for Sir Winston Churchill in the Crypt, visitors can compare the restored West Front and East End of the Cathedral with the still to be completed South and North façades - a fascinating way to appreciate the hard work and expertise that have gone into removing centuries of London soot and grime.

But of course, the pinnacle of any trip to St Paul's has to be the winding journey up the spiral staircase to the Whispering Gallery to sample its unique acoustics before travelling up and out to the Stone and Golden Galleries, which afford a panoramic view of London that never ceases to take one’s breath away.

Whether you've visited St Paul's in the past or will be making your first trip, we can guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Satyagraha Theatre Tickets, London Coliseum, London

One of the most visually spectacular opera stagings of recent decades, ENO's London premiere production of Philip Glass's Satyagraha broke all Company box-office records for contemporary opera when it was first seen in 2007. Instilled with breath-taking theatrical flair by Improbable's award-winning director-designer partnership of Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch, it went on to enjoy equal success at the Metropolitan Opera, New York. A mesmerisingly hypnotic musical meditation upon Mahatma Gandhi's early years in South Africa, and his spiritual progress towards the concept of non-violent protest, Glass's operatic masterpiece now returns to the London Coliseum. Alan Oke repeats his compelling central performance as the young political activist taking the first tentative steps in his lifelong search for truth.

La Fille du régiment Theatre Tickets, Royal Opera House, London

Laurent Pelly’s fabulously entertaining production of La Fille du règiment was the hottest ticket in town when it was first staged early in 2007. The wonderful combination of great performance, stylish design and irreverently witty production are all ready for this first revival by The Royal Opera, and Bruno Campanella once more conducts Donizetti’s lively and memorable masterpiece to bring out all its undeniable lyrical charm. Many of the original cast return for their roles, so Natalie Dessay will once more be singing fabulous coloratura while ironing the regimental smalls — just one of a host of musical and stage moments from start to finish that has had the audience laughing out loud.

The story has all the elements of comic coincidence and timely discovery as our tomboy heroine is forced into more ladylike circles suitable to her aristocratic birth. But while a judicious society wedding may be the intention of some, this heroine is far too spirited to give in to any wishes but those of her own heart. This is not a revival to miss if you like great singing of virtuosic showpieces, with a star cast and every number beautifully honed to hit its target — sometimes touching, sometimes lyrical, but always a delight. And in this inspired production, it is a truly memorable night of sheer fun with The Royal Opera.

Running Time: 2 hours 45 minutes

    Conductor: Bruno Campanella

    Director: Laurent Pelly
    Set designs: Chantal Thomas
